Press Release: January, 2009

BUILDING INSPECTION ENGINEERS BECOME BOARD CERTIFIED

As of last year, buyers looking for added assurance will be able to find a board certified licensed Professional Engineer in their state. Many Criterium building inspection engineers have become the first engineers in the country to become board certified building inspection engineers. Building Inspection Engineering is a 50 year-old specialty within the engineering community. However, only in the last year has that specialty been acknowledged with its own, unique credential.

Board certification is similar to certifications in other licensed professions. It requires a demonstration of skill and experience combined in an area of specialization. Unlike other certifications created by trade groups, board certification involves a professional process of review by peers. And unlike state licensing of home inspectors, board certification for building inspection engineers applies to all building types including commercial and industrial properties.

Board certification means that the engineer has been tested in the special skills and knowledge about the inspection, assessment and evaluation of buildings of all types. It means that he or she has special insight and judgment in this practice area beyond the four-year baccalaureate degree in engineering, many years of practical experience, and the experience and test validation necessary to achieve the P.E. designation itself.

A board certified engineer has obtained the most rigorous credentials and experience. This certification conveys a breadth of knowledge and competence, two criteria most respected by the public we serve. Certification is governed by the Building Inspection Engineering Certification Institute (BIECI) through its own by-laws and Board of Governors. It is independent of all other organizations. The certification program is accredited by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB). It was initially sponsored and endorsed by The National Academy of Building Inspection Engineers (NABIE), an affinity group of the National Society of Professional Engineers.
