CRITERIUM ENGINEERS FORMS JOINT VENTURE IN BRAZIL
Criterium Engineers, the nation’s oldest building inspection engineering company, is pleased to announce that it has entered into a joint venture with VIP - Vistorias e Inspeções Prediais Engenharia, Ltda. of Brazil. Criterium Engineers provides real estate engineering including building inspections, property condition assessments, environmental site assessments, reserve studies, construction monitoring and quality assurance services. The firm is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and is an Engineering News Record ranked top 500 firm.
VIP was first established in Sao Paulo in 1987 and is Brazil’s first building inspection company. The firm inspects roughly 1,000 buildings each year, primarily for the purpose of establishing maintenance plans. Zeferino Velloso, an engineer and Director of VIP, became intrigued with the Criterium model and traveled to the U.S. to attend the annual meeting of the National Academy of Building Inspection Engineers. According to Velloso, "The market in Brazil is expanding rapidly, both as a result of our expanding economy as well as U.S. investment in South America. We intend to expand to all major cities in Brazil in a manner similar to Criterium Engineers expansion in the U.S."
The joint venture has already resulted in its first joint project, an environmental assessment and construction monitoring services for a new shopping center being built in the city of Macae, state of Rio de Janeiro. According to Peter Hollander, Executive Vice President of Criterium Engineers, "We are extremely excited about this joint venture and the potential for additional work in South America. VIP has staked out a leading position in the local market and we sense a high degree of compatibility between our two companies."
Each Criterium office operates as a local business providing reliable and cost effective services to the community in which it is based. However, unlike small local consulting firms, Criterium offices have resources available to them that can only be found in the nation's leading and largest firms. Services such as technical support, training, consultation, and excellent errors and omissions liability insurance help each local office stand out among all other firms in the area. According to Alan Mooney, Criterium Engineers president, "Through our unique organization, each local office can offer a diversified range of services because they have the resources of the national organization to draw upon."
