Press Release: May, 2007

"Technology and Sustainability are Surging" was the theme of this year's Engineering News Record (ENR) top 500 list. Criterium Engineers, building consulting engineers, has been ranked number 436, up from 476 last year, by ENR based on gross billings in 2006 of over $21 million.

ENR is one of the leading professional engineering magazines with circulation in excess of 71,000 and readership of about 284,000. Each year, the magazine surveys design firms nationwide and ranks the top 500, based on overall billings in the previous year. Criterium Engineers is unique among all firms on the list in that it consists of more than 65 local consulting engineering franchises. Each serves a defined geographic area. Services are consistent from office to office and quality is maintained through a set of standards, high quality materials produced by the national office for use by all affiliated offices, and an ongoing program of continuing education and peer reviews.

Criterium Engineers specializes in property condition assessments, building evaluation, reserve studies, litigation support, construction monitoring and design for real estate owners, investors, and managers. According to ENR, "The market for design in the U.S. and around the world is as strong as it as ever been and large design firms are reaping the bounty." Criterium Engineers’ business reflects the general health of the industry as we are asked to provide more and more quality assurance services for all the new construction that is taking place. Even though residential construction has softened in recent months, non-residential construction has jumped over 14 percent from 2006 according to Mortgage Banking published by the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Overall growth for engineering firms, according to ENR, was up 17.5% as compared to 12.6% in the U.S. last year. For the profession, finding talented people continues to be the biggest problem, and fees are going up as a simple function of supply and demand. There has also been strong international growth for many firms.

Criterium Engineers has seen growth in several key markets, including services to community associations (transition studies, reserve studies), construction monitoring, and construction quality assurance services. Criterium also provided property condition assessment services for some major real estate transactions in 2006. According to H. Alan Mooney, P.E., president of the company, "after a great year in 2006, we are on track to exceed these results in 2007. Our offices are extremely busy and we are looking forward to an exciting year."

Making the ENR list is significant for Criterium Engineers for it underscores the value of the organization to its thousands of local clients. Each office operates as a local business providing reliable and cost effective services to the community in which it is based. However, unlike other small consulting firms, Criterium offices have resources available to them that can only be found in the nation's leading and largest firms. Services such as technical support, training, consultation, and excellent errors and omissions liability insurance help each local office stand out among all other firms in the area. According to Mooney, "Through our unique organization, each local office can offer a diversified range of services because they have the resources of the national organization to draw upon."
